A cell phone is an electronic device used for two-way communication. People use cell phones to keep in touch with friends and family members, to conduct business and for emergency purposes. Cell phones also provide additional services such as email and text messaging.
A cell phone differs from a cordless phone, which only offers service from a fixed line in your home or office. With a cell phone, a user can communicate throughout the country from a public wireless network.
The Cell Phone's History
Dr. Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher, demonstrated the first cell phone in 1973. This phone weighed in at 2 kilograms, or 4.4 pounds. Later in 1983, Cooper and Motorola released the DynaTAC 8000X to the public. By 1990, about 12.4 million people worldwide owned a cell phone subscription.
